Diamond drilling is all about productivity. Drillers and the companies they work for are interested in finding ways to improve productivity. Sometimes a major problem negatively affects drilling productivity and it just needs to be addressed. Sometimes, productivity can be improved by tweaking a bunch of little things. If you tweak a few things, the results can make a big difference.

1) Increase your ROP

Drill speed is a key parameter in diamond drilling. If you can increase your ROP, you can get the highest return for the least amount of work. A good ROP will ensure that your operation runs economically. To improve your ROP, you need to find the best drilling parameters for the rock type and rock conditions, combined with the best coring bit and crown configuration for that type of ground.

2) Buy quality equipment

The old saying "you get what you pay for" definitely applies to diamond drilling. Trying to save money by buying cheap drill pipe or core bits may result in you having to change core bits more often or in premature breakage of the drill pipe.

3) Extend drill bit life

As mentioned above, every drill operator wants to dig as much as possible into the drill bit. This means making sure it is not damaged before you start drilling and avoiding having to stop operations in order to replace the bit. You can read more about how to extend the life of your core bit here.

4) Choosing the right equipment

Choosing the right core bit is probably one of the decisions that will have the greatest impact on drilling performance. Many variables need to be considered, including ground hardness, variability, abrasiveness and capacity, as well as the type of rig being used, drilling experience and expected drilling depth. The choice of reaming shell, coring barrel, corer system and drill pipe will all affect productivity.

6) Regular Maintenance

Check all the equipment you will be using and make sure all parts are working properly. Make sure they are clean and lubricated. If necessary, use a degreaser and make sure the rod threads are coated with thread compound.

7) Use additives

Adding drilling fluid additives to your mud program can reduce operating costs and improve performance in a number of ways, including reducing the likelihood of stalling drilling operations. Additives can lubricate your equipment and extend its life by reducing wear and limiting rod rust. Additives can help solve problems such as collapsed holes, dry holes, and abrasive and sandy holes.
