What is a diamond drill bit?
A drill bit is not uncommon as it is commonly used to drill holes in wooden surfaces. A drill is a cutting tool that removes material and produces holes, mainly of circular cross section. However, a diamond bit is a convenient and unique tool because it is used to make holes in non-wood surfaces.
When you hear about diamond bits, the first thing you probably think of is that they are shiny little diamond tools used to beautify your shop. But instead, they refer to diamond bits as diamond drill bits because they consist of small pieces of diamond powder embedded inside the part. Diamond is one of the hardest substances in the world and can basically cut through anything, which explains the strength of the tool.
What should be aware when using ?
Drill bits, although effective, can be dangerous and cause damage if they are not handled properly. These are the precautions to follow when using drill bits.
i. Wear strong gloves to hold the drill bit tightly, as the drill bit generates a lot of vibration. You do not want your hands to lose their balance and damage your workpiece in the process.
ii. Make sure your hands are away from the bottom of the drill to avoid injury/trauma.
iii. Drill where there is enough room so that you can keep your feet firmly on the ground.
iv. Avoid wearing loose, baggy clothing so they don't get in the way of your work.
v. Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from the flying particles that are sure to be present during the drilling process.
vi. Always refer to the power drill manual for the exact type of machine to be processed.
vii. Use the drill at the proper speed, with less pressure and plenty of lubrication.
How long can drill bits last?
The first determinant of the life of a diamond bit is the company that makes it. It is important to buy from a reputable company because different companies have different production methods. Some companies use inferior materials to make their tools, which can cause the bits to wear out faster than bits made by high quality companies.
Service life also depends on its use, i.e. speed, pressure, lubrication, and the type of material you use for the drill.
For example, a diamond bit can drill an average of 400 holes in ceramic, but if you are drilling dense stained glass, the same bit can make 100 holes.
The life of the drill depends largely on the use of the drill and the type of material it is drilling.
How to maintain properly?
Proper maintenance will extend the life of your drill bits and help you get the most out of them. Your manual is your best maintenance guide, but you can also practice the following to adequately care for your drill bits.
i. Always sharpen your drill bit to maintain its precise edge.
ii. Determine the exact position of the drill to be drilled so that you do not have to re-align the drill after drilling has begun. Diamond drills have a specific type of movement that can lead to mechanical complications if interfered with improperly.
iii. Know your equipment. Do not assume that every drill bit works the same; study your drill bit in depth.
iv. Always trim the diamond portion of the drill bit to expose new diamonds. If you find that the diamond bit has lost its shape and stiffness, send it back to the manufacturer for return.
